NewmanCatholic College

A UNICEF Rights Respecting School

The Governing Body

The Governors of Newman Catholic College are responsible for setting and maintaining the strategic direction of the school. Governors act as critical friends of the school, working with the Headteacher and senior leaders to agree priorities and monitor progress towards objectives to ensure students are given every opportunity to fulfil their potential. Because Newman College is a Catholic school the Governors are also responsible for ensuring that the Catholic identity of the school is preserved and developed as the Westminster Diocese would wish.

The school has a number of Governor categories: foundation (appointed by the Diocese); staff; local authority; parent and co-opted. Governors are drawn from various sectors of the wider community to provide a balanced and diverse perspective on the work of the school.

The strategic work of the Governing Body takes place at the full Governing Body meetings, which all Governors are expected to attend, and in Committee meetings.  Much of the more detailed work aimed at monitoring standards, questioning and probing the school’s performance, and reviewing essential policies is carried out in the sub-committees.  The Governing Body has three main Committees (Curriculum Committee, Finance and Premises Committee and the Personnel Committee).  All Governors are expected to serve on at least one of these Committees.

Governors help to make decisions about the school’s long-term goals. Governors both support and challenge the Headteacher and senior leaders by asking probing questions and reviewing evidence to make sure the school is moving in the direction agreed by the Governing Body.  They monitor various aspects of the school’s performance such as curriculum provision, student outcomes and school finances. They are also responsible for the performance management of the Headteacher, with the support of the Local Authority.

The school is thankful for the role played by Governors and the Governors, in turn, appreciate the support they receive from the school community in ensuring that we live out the mission of Newman Catholic College – Everyone Counts, Everyone Contributes, Everyone Succeeds

Parent and Staff Governors are elected by parents and staff respectively when there are vacancies.  Other Governors are appointed by existing members of the Governing Body or by the Diocese.  The term of office for all Governors is four years.
