A UNICEF Rights Respecting School

Refugee Students determined to succeed

Newman Catholic College has always been a place of sanctuary, welcome and diversity. We have asylum seeker and refugee students from thirteen different countries. Many have come from war torn countries, faced many challenges and overcome adversity. Worldwide, approximately one in 97 people - have been forced to flee their homes due to war, trauma or persecution according to the UN Refugee Agency. This has nearly doubled compared to ten years ago. Here in the UK,  around 43 per cent of people seeking asylum in 2020 were women and children. Overall, 8% were unaccompanied minors who arrived in the UK alone without a parent or guardian. A number of these young people are in our school. These young people are highly aspirational with a thirst for knowledge and success. Our aim is to open our doors, love our neighbours and welcome the stranger regardless of their faith, background or culture into our Newman Family.
