Catholic Life
"A faith without bearing fruit in life, a faith that doesn't bear fruit in works is not faith."
Pupils understand that at Newman Catholic College, ‘everyone counts, everyone contributes, everyone succeeds’. The pupils recognise this as a part of our Catholic faith and identity in which we believe that everyone is made in the image of God. All of our pupils value this belief and live it out in all aspects in the life of our school.
This fundamental belief is encapsulated and expressed by our use of ‘Newman Values’ (which are displayed in all planners, classrooms and across areas in school), and these values are modelled by staff and pupils in the way they act towards each other and the wider community in which they are a part of. This ensures that all members of our school community feel happy, confident and secure within the “Newman Family”. The ‘Newman Values’ are an interpretation of British Values alongside key Gospel Values in a way that is relevant to our pupil demographic. This includes ‘the Golden Rule’, familiar to students of all faiths, making the messaging of ‘Newman Values’ inclusive yet distinctly Catholic.
All pupils, regardless of faith, are involved in the whole school, year group and class Masses and assemblies. Non-Christian pupils and staff are encouraged to feel part of our celebration by going up for a blessing at Communion time, being part of the Offertory procession, or giving a reading. Our pupils willingly support our work and practise of our faith in school celebrations for Mass and events of the liturgical year. This includes a number of non-Christian pupils, who also play a role in the preparation and organising of Mass in our school by being part of the Fides Actio group (which is run by the school Chaplain) or being recruited by its members to be involved in liturgical preparation.
