Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Awards

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) is a recognition program for young people aged 14 to 24. In an atmosphere of social contact, teamwork, and physical challenge, a curriculum of activities develops the mind, body, and soul (an expedition). Newman Catholic College began the program with Year 9 students in early 2020, and there has been a lot of interest and support for it since then.

The DofE is divided into four sections:

  • The Volunteering segment deals with assisting less fortunate members of the society.

  • The physical section allows students to progress in a physical activity or sport of their choosing.

  • Participants in the Skills segment are pursuing a hobby, talent, or interest.

  • The expedition section helps participants to become self-sufficient when exploring the countryside by teaching them how to navigate using a map and compass. Within a team of 7, participants must prepare and conduct a self-sufficient expedition.

  • Residential (Gold Only) - this segment entails staying in a new setting for 5 days and 4 nights.

For their Service, Ability, and Physical parts, students use an online tool to track their progress in hours. In order to train participants for the two-day expedition, after-school classes cover a broad range of topics.

Newman Catholic College grounds  will host bronze practice expeditions, and the  assessment expeditions.
